Nonfiction Book Templates FAQ

What are the 5 nonfiction text structures?

The structure of a nonfiction text depends on the author's goal. Typically, there are five main objectives and, accordingly, five types of structures.

Here are each of the five standard nonfiction text patterns:

  • Sequence (process). A step-by-step approach with a clear sequence of actions. This format is used for nonfiction texts that teach something new or explain how something works. Examples of such texts include instructions, recipes, and educational articles.
  • Topic-based (description). When a subject or problem needs to be examined from different angles, a categorical organization is used. This ensures that all aspects of the subject are taken into account. Examples include Wikipedia and encyclopedia articles, travel brochures, and product descriptions with specifications.
  • Comparison and contrast. When several objects need to be studied simultaneously, authors use a comparative analysis. In such texts, all similarities and differences between the subjects are compared. This is a standard structure for gadget reviews in a "vs." format, comparison tables, and "pros and cons" articles.
  • Cause and effect. When you need to show how one event causes another, a cause-and-effect structure is used. For example, a meteorologist's article about why a hurricane occurred, why an exchange rate fluctuated, or why a person got sick (these are all examples of cause-and-effect relationships).
  • Problem and solution. When you need to show the "before and after" of a situation, a problem-solution structure is used. It shows the dynamics of change and its causes, answering the question "how to fix this?" A business plan, a case study on overcoming a crisis, and even a landing page addressing customer "pain points" are excellent examples.

Depending on the purpose of your nonfiction book, you can choose one of these five structure options. By the way, our website also offers ready-made covers and nonfiction book templates for any project. Download and edit them for free.
