How to Get a Google Doc to Read to You?
This time we’re making Google Docs read the text aloud for us.
Watch the video from https://thegoodocs.com/ and learn how to get a Google Doc read to you:
Well, making Google Docs read the text aloud for us takes a Chrome extension. So, we need to use the Google Chrome browser. Overall it takes two steps: getting the extension out of the Chrome Web Store and switching on the screen reader tools support in Google Docs. Let’s get to it.
Accessibility for Screen Reader
The first step is to turn on the screen reader support.
- In this menu, we check the box of the first item. This is “Turn on screen reader support” and save it by pressing “OK” in the bottom right corner
Now for step 2, we go to the Chrome Web Store.
Installing the Extension
- Chrome Web Store is located on https://chrome.google.com/webstore/. Or just search in Google for “Chrome Web Store”. We will open it
- Then we locate the extension search field over here (you will see on the screenshot below) and enter “Screen Reader”
- Here, on the new page, we literally need the first one in the search results. This is “Screen Reader” offered by Google. So, we click on it
- And on the extension's page, on the right, we locate and press on “Add to Chrome”
- It will ask for permission to install. And we allow with the “Add extension” button, waiting a bit until it is installed
- And once you see such a pop-up, the extension is installed and ready to work
Demonstration
- Now we go back to our document. Here we highlight the part of the text that we need to be read aloud. Then go to the “Accessibility” button on the top toolbar dragging the mouse to “Speak” and selecting the “Speak selection”
